View device data

7 min

To view data from a Litmus Edge Instance, at least one child device (connected device within the Litmus Edge instance) must be first properly set up. The child device must be connected with tags, and then the tags must be transformed as imported topics inside the Litmus Edge instance's Default Generic MQTT SSL connector. This first child connection will facilitate the data connection between a Litmus Edge instance and the Litmus Edge Manager. Additional child device connections from a Litmus Edge instance will append to the Litmus Edge instance's data and also display as additional child devices in Litmus Edge Manager.

Notes:

Viewing a child device's messages works only for standard tags.

If the child device's tag is removed from the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector, the child device is not deleted from the list of available child devices and will still be displayed.

Before you begin

Using Litmus Edge Manager, activate an edge device. See Activate Edge Device for more details.

To use view data from an edge device and/or a child device, you will need to do the following.

Step 1: Connect a Device with Tags in Litmus Edge

Step 2: Set up Default Generic MQTT SSL Connector with Imported Topics in Litmus Edge

Step 3: View Data in Litmus Edge Manager

To jump to a specific section, refer to the Table of Contents on the right side and click the corresponding step.

Step 1: Connect a device with tags in Litmus Edge

Before data can be viewed for a Litmus Edge Instance, a device must be first connected to the instance, and then associated with tags. This allows the connected device's data to be extracted from the Litmus Edge instance.

To connect a device with at least one tag:

Connect a Device
Litmus Edge : DeviceHub > Devices : Newly connected device
Add Tags to the connected device from the previous step.
Add a tag to a newly connected device

Step 2: Set up default generic MQTT SSL connector with imported topics in Litmus Edge

After a device is connected with tags, the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector must be enabled. Then the generated tags earlier must then be transformed as topics to be immediately imported and enabled into the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector.

To set up Default Generic MQTT SSL connector with at least one imported topic:

To import the tag into the generic MQTT SSL connector:

Log in to Litmus Edge.
Navigate to Integration.
Click the generic-mqtt-ssl connector tile.
Click the Topics tab.
Click the Import from DeviceHub tags icon. The DeviceHub Import dialog box appears.
Import from DeviceHub tags icon
Select the check box to import the tag from the device you created earlier and click Import.
DeviceHub Import dialog box
Click the Enable all topics icon.
Enable all topics icon
Return to the Integration pane and toggle the connect option and confirm the status is CONNECTED.

Step 3: View data in Litmus Edge Manager

Once a Litmus Edge instance is connected to Litmus Edge Manager and a device is added to that Litmus Edge instance, you can view data (outbound messages) from that Litmus Edge instance or that instance's child device in the Litmus Edge Manager UI.

To access the data viewing UI in Litmus Edge Manager:

Select a company. The Projects pane appears.

Do one of the following:

Click a project from the Projects pane. The Dashboard pane appears for the project.

Click the Actions icon for a project, and then select View. The Dashboard pane appears for the project.

From the navigation panel, select Edge Devices. The Edge Devices pane appears.

View data from Edge device

To view edge device data:

From Edge Devices, click the ID of the edge device whose data you want to view. The Device Details pane appears.

Click the Raw tab. The Raw Data pane appears.

Toggle Auto-Refresh at the bottom of the pane.

Select the refresh interval from the Interval drop-down list. The messages published by the topics you have added to the Generic MQTT-SSL connector in Step 2: Set Up Default Generic MQTT SSL Connector with Imported Topics in Litmus Edge appear on the pane. The list of messages is refreshed according to the interval you have selected from the earlier step.

View data from child Edge device

To view child edge device data:

Click the Show child devices icon next to an edge device. The child devices for the edge device drop down.

Click the ID of the child device whose data you want to view. The selected device's information pane appears.

Click the Explore tab. The Explore pane appears.

Toggle Auto-Refresh at the bottom of the pane.

Select the refresh interval from the Interval drop-down list. The topics you have added to the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector in Step 2: Set Up Default Generic MQTT SSL Connector with Imported Topics in Litmus Edge appear on the pane. Their Last Value and Updated At fields refresh according to the interval you have selected in the previous step.

To see the list of values a topic has published since it began auto-refreshing, click Last Value for that topic. The values appear in the Edge Device Object value dialog box, in a tabular format.

To display the same data as a chart, select the Chart tab.

Note: Once a child device's data has been published (and has become viewable) in Litmus Edge Manager, you can visualize this data using Grafana. See Visualize Child Device Data Using Grafana.
