You can apply a parameterized template to one or more edge devices from the *Templates* pane of an open project.

When applying a parameterized template, you can apply it to a group of edge devices. Click the group to show only the edge devices in the selected group.

To apply a template when you activate an edge device, see [Apply parameterized template during activation](docId\:hGXk9Kz0RYk75Mvd0z_3S).

## How template variables work

When you apply a parameterized template, you set a value for each variable in the template. Litmus Edge Manager (LEM) uses each variable's JSON path to place your value in the template, and then sends the result to the edge device.

**To apply a parameterized template: **

1. Log in to Litmus Edge Manager.
2. Select a company.
 The *Projects* pane appears.
3. Select a project.
4. From the navigation panel, select **Templates**.
 The *Templates* pane appears.
5. Click the **Actions** icon next to a parameterized template and select **Apply Template**.
The *Apply Template: Select Edge Devices to Appl*y dialog box appears.
6. Select one or more check boxes next to edge devices, and then click **Apply**.
The *Set Variables* dialog box appears.
7. From the **Set Variables **dialog box, enter the variable value in the variable field.
**Example**: Enter `PLC1` in the **device\_name** field.
8. Click **Apply**.

LEM checks the template and the target edge devices, and then applies the template to the selected edge devices. If a check fails, LEM reports the issue. Correct the issue, and then apply the template again.

The apply options work as follows:

- **Reset & Apply:** Replaces the target configuration with the template.
- **Merge & Apply:** Combines the template with the current target configuration.
- **Apply:** Uses the existing rules for each type of setting and does not create a saved configuration.

## Verify template parameters on an edge device

A template can contain many types of variables. The following verification procedure is an example.

**To verify template parameters are applied to an edge device: **

1. From another browser tab, log in to Litmus Edge.
2. From the Navigation panel, select **DeviceHub**.
 The *Edge Devices *pane appears.
3. Select the device for which the template was applied and ensure that the variables entered in the *Set Variables* dialog box appear correctly.

**Example**: If `device_name` is a variable, make sure that the name for the device is correct. In this case, `PLC1`.
